Overcoming Self-Doubt: My Journey to Learning How to Draw
There are certain things we believe about ourselves that feel absolutely true. We don’t always know why we believe them or where they came from, but they shape the way we see ourselves. For years, I told myself: “I can’t draw anything lifelike.” It wasn’t just a passing thought—it was a belief that had been ingrained in me since childhood.
Embracing the Creative Process
I’ve always had a determined mindset. If there’s something I want to do, I’ll figure out a way to make it happen. And if someone tells me I can’t do something? Well, that’s just fuel for the fire—I’m going to prove them (and sometimes myself) wrong.
So, after years of believing I simply wasn’t capable of drawing, I finally challenged that idea. I picked up a pencil, allowed myself to experiment, and realized something incredible: I CAN draw.
My Art Journey
I’ve been practicing, learning, and discovering the joy of drawing. Each sketch, each imperfect line, and each new technique is part of the process. It’s not just about improving my skills—it’s about proving to myself that creativity is something we can nurture, no matter where we start.
Here are two sketches of the same cat:
When I was just starting to try to draw realistically to a more current version.
The Healing Power of Creativity
I’ve found that embracing creativity has been deeply fulfilling. Art isn’t just about making something beautiful—it’s about self-expression, personal growth, and even healing. Every stroke on the page is a reminder that we can rewrite our own narratives. Even if you aren’t creating the artwork yourself, just being around it has such abundant benefits.
What Beliefs Are Holding You Back?
The reason I’m sharing this isn’t just to talk about my art journey—it’s to encourage you to take a closer look at the beliefs you might be holding onto.
Ask yourself:
Is this belief really true?
What would happen if it wasn’t?
What if I gave myself permission to try?
You might surprise yourself. I know I did.
If you’ve ever told yourself you’re “not creative” or “can’t do art,” I challenge you to pick up a pencil, a paintbrush, or whatever tool inspires you—and just start. Because the truth is, creativity isn’t about being perfect. It’s about allowing yourself to explore, learn, and grow.
