The 100-Day Sketchbook Project: A Journey of Art & Creativity

How a Daily Sketching Practice Transformed My Art

In 2020, during the pandemic, I found myself endlessly scrolling the internet (as one does) and stumbled upon a Surface Pattern Design class. I was immediately drawn to it—after all, I’ve always been captivated by artistic patterns, fabric designs, and scrapbook papers. This class opened up an entirely new creative world, pushing me to explore digital art, Adobe Illustrator, and surface design.

Up until that point, my creative work had always been tactile—jewelry making, lampwork glass, papermaking, and bookbinding. I had never considered myself an “artist” in the traditional sense. Pencils and paint? That was for real artists—or so I thought. (But that’s a conversation for another day!)

Discovering a Love for Sketchbooks & Watercolor

As I experimented with digital drawing, I felt closer to finding my artistic voice, but something was still missing. That’s when a dear friend—an incredible watercolor artist and teacher—encouraged me to pick up a brush. She shared techniques, cheered me on, and gave me the best advice:

"Just try and see what happens—it is never wrong."

Her words stuck with me, and after her passing, I honored her memory by embracing her wisdom. That’s when I decided to commit to a 100-day sketchbook project.

100 Days of Sketching: Finding My Artistic Style

In late February 2022, I began a daily sketchbook practice—simply putting marks on a page every day, letting creativity guide me. Through this process, I rediscovered my love for pen & ink and watercolor. I was drawn to the contrast:

  • Fine black penwork creates depth and structure.

  • Watercolors are fluid, vibrant, and full of movement.

This combination allows me to explore both realism and abstraction, balance control with spontaneity, and push my artistic boundaries.

From Sketchbook to Collectible Art

This daily creative challenge didn’t just shape my style—it transformed my approach to art. Sketchbooks became essential to my creative process, serving as a space for exploration, refinement, and inspiration. Many of my original sketches evolve into finished works, including:

Fine art prints for collectors
Notecards & journals
Wall art and home decor                                                                                                                     Pet Portraits

My art is for those who appreciate thoughtful, handcrafted work, whether it’s a one-of-a-kind original or a beautifully designed art print.
